“Never Have I Ever” star Darren Barnet has landed a guest star role on the Season 7 premiere of ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Variety has learned exclusively.
In the show’s final season opener, titled “The New Deal,” Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the agents are thrust back in time to 1931 New York City, where they encounter Barnet’s character. It’s unclear how many episodes Barnet will be featured in the role, although his character could have a lasting impact on the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” universe.
Fan favorite Patton Oswalt also returns to the series in an unspecified new role; in past seasons, Oswalt has portrayed iterations of the Koenig siblings, a family with close ties to S.H.I.E.L.D.
Barnet is most recently known for his portrayal of teen heartthrob Paxton Hall-Yoshida on Netflix’s comedy series, co-created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher.
In July, Variety reported that the long-running ABC show’s seventh season would be its last. “Next summer’s Season 7 will be the last for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,” the show’s official Twitter account announced. “Thanks to our fans for allowing us to be the longest-running Marvel TV series to-date.”
“The New Deal” was written by George Kitson and directed by Kevin Tancharoen. The show was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen, who also serve as executive producers along with Jeffrey Bell, Jeph Loeb, and Jim Chory. The series is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.
“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 7 premieres May 27 at 10 p.m.
Barnet is represented by Buchwald and Endorsement Management Group.

The hilarious cast of Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” played my game “The Truth Comes Out.” It seems they know each other… maybe a little too well.

Happy Mother’s Day to my wonderful mom and all the amazing mommas out there. Sad that the circumstances of the world have prevented us from being together on this day. But I needed to say thank you. Thank you for always loving me, nurturing me, and pushing me far beyond the limitations I ever set for myself. As you always told me, “The more you do, the more you can do.” Here are some photos from last Mother’s Day and also from the @neverhaveiever wrap party where I took you as my date and we danced the night away. Actually, if I remember correctly, I had to take a break and you kept breaking it down with my cast mates 😂 Love you, mom. Missing you and my two wonderful sisters @jenbarnet_rhythmx and @emilyxbreanna

Never Have I Ever, the new Netflix original series created by The Office star Mindy Kaling and based loosely on her own high school years, follows teenager Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) as she navigates the normal highs and lows of teenage life in the aftermath of a huge loss. It might sound like grim viewing, but the emotional storytelling is balanced with warmth and humor — not to mention a killer soundtrack.
And what would any self-respecting teenage comedy-drama be without a heartthrob? Enter Paxton Hall-Yoshida.
A particularly memorable scene from the show, which became prominently featured in the trailer for the show, involves a daydream sequence in which heartthrob Paxton visits main character Devi in her bedroom, and removes his T-shirt in a single rapid, fluid motion, revealing a ripped physique.
It’s a knowingly over-the-top moment of pure teenage fantasy, and it has gone semi-viral since the show dropped on Netflix, with guys sharing videos of their own ill-fated attempts to recreate Paxton’s smooth shirt-shedding movement.
“That was like a moment for me,” says Darren Barnet, who plays Paxton. “When I saw how many people are doing it, I had no idea that move was going to such, like, a thing.”
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 29-year-old actor explains the hours of preparation that went into that single scene, and how it nearly ended disastrously.
“They originally told me they wanted me to take it off from behind, with one hand, and I kept choking myself,” he says. “So I was like, it’s not going to work this way, man, it’s going around my neck, so I went how about this way, doing it with the other arm, and they were like yeah, just do it as fast as you can. So I went home, and I was like [whooshing sound]. It became like muscle memory.”

In Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever,” Darren Barnet stars as Paxton Hall-Yoshida, the popular swimmer who Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) propositions in an effort to boost her reputation in high school. The teen heartthrob character was originally named “Paxton Hall” until creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher learned of Barnet’s own Japanese heritage and decided to incorporate his mixed background into the role, hence “Yoshida.”
The 29-year-old tells Variety why he was initially nervous about incorporating his multiethnic background, how his high school experience had little in common with Paxton’s, and why he is also Team Devi.
I’m in L.A., day fifty-something of being totally alone. So, it’s been quite the inner journey, having me, myself and I. I try to stick to a routine as much as possible but certain days, sleeping in until 1 in the afternoon. Doing publicity is one of the only things keeping me with a schedule. It’s nice to just have some things to do every day and get me up. I’m trying to work out and be ready at any point to take my shirt off ‘cause people keep asking me that [laughs]. I wouldn’t say I’m in as great of shape as I was on-camera but, thankfully, if I have to get ready for something, it’s a pretty quick process for me to get it back.
I did not expect it. I did not expect my character to be such a focal point. So, that’s been some pressure, but I’m blown away because a lot of people are saying, “You went past being a heartthrob, and you did things with the character that I think only you could do.” And that was making him human, making him likable. I’m honored that they feel I accomplished that.
It has been the number one thing I’ve seen on breakdowns for auditions since I started this career. It got to the point where I got so close and so close and so close and just kept being denied denied denied, I was like, “I guess I’m just not hitting the mark on this one.”
So, getting this one was cool. Mindy [Kaling] and all of them, I’m sure they saw people better looking than me, in better shape than me, all that, but they took us all aside, saying, “We chose you for this role because of you and what you bring as a person.” That was an honor to know because they wanted Paxton to be more than just abs.
Love it, yeah.
