“Never Have I Ever” star Darren Barnet spoke to Insider about his favorite scene from season one of the Netflix series, “humanizing” Paxton Hall-Yoshida, and forging his own path.
“I expected the show to do well and I knew we made something good, but the amount of love and admiration from fans has been insane,” Barnet told us. “I knew it would do well, but I didn’t know it would do this well, and that’s maybe a tribute to quarantine, with everyone being able to sit on the couch and actually watch it for what it’s worth and realize that it’s not just a comedy. It also touches on very real-life topics.”
“NHIE” was cocreated by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, inspired by Kaling’s own childhood. The show centers on Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a first-generation Indian American who begins her sophomore year at Sherman Oaks High School with a mission to ditch her uncool reputation and become popular.

“Never Have I Ever” stars Jaren Lewison and Darren Barnet weighed in on the Netflix show’s love triangle.
Lewison, who stars as Ben Gross, and Barnet, who plays Paxton-Hall Yoshida spoke to Insider during separate interviews and broke down who they think is a better match for protagonist Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan).
“NHIE,” which was co-created by Lang Fisher and Mindy Kaling, begins at the start of Devi’s sophomore year at Sherman Oaks High School in California as she tries to rebrand as a cool person at school.
Part of her plan to become popular involves losing her virginity to Paxton, an attractive member of the school’s swim team who has three fan accounts on Tumblr. They don’t actually have sex, but she leads her best friends to believe that they did and the lie spirals out of control.
She’s also constantly trying to one-up Ben, her academic rival and nemesis, in history class and extracurricular activities.
Gradually, a love triangle involving Devi, Ben, and Paxton forms.
Darren Barnet and I are discussing lunch options over Zoom when he says he’s craving a burger, fries, and a vanilla milkshake. Quarantining by himself since the beginning of the coronavirus lockdown, all he’s looking for is some comfort food, which is surprising given his apparent dedication to shirtless Instagram posts.
Barnet currently stars in the Mindy Kaling-created comedy, Never Have I Ever, and is probably best known for his washboard abs. Since the show dropped on Netflix, fans have swooned over Barnet’s portrayal of Paxton Hall-Yoshida, the resident jock and object of protagonist Devi’s affections. And it’s no wonder, given that five minutes into the pilot, Barnet steps out of the pool dripping wet, abs visible, and with Robyn’s Dancing On My Own playing in the background.
“I think [the producers] were scared I was too muscular,” he says with a laugh when I ask him about his audition. “I remember them saying, ‘his guns are a little much.’”
Staying in shape comes second nature to Barnet; he’s played sports since his childhood. And in between the years of lacrosse, basketball, boxing, and martial arts, he tried to follow his dreams of becoming an actor. After guest-starring on hit shows like This Is Us and Criminal Minds, the actor was determined to get into shape for his first series regular role.

Darren Barnet is feeling a little lonely. In the midst of “horny on main” season, Barnet’s performance was the perfect thirsty fix for Twitter; the Never Have I Ever star is officially the Internet’s new boyfriend thanks to his swoon-worthy role as Paxton Hall-Yoshida, the hottest guy at Sherman Oaks High and the crush of teen heroine Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan).
But despite this newfound popularity, Barnet is currently holed up in his Los Angeles home, allllll by himself. “I’m going on day 50 now [of self-isolation],” he tells ELLE.com over the phone. “It’s been…eye-opening.”
I am incredulous. A person this hot? By themselves during quarantine? “Not even a dog to hang out with?” He sighs. “Nope. I have absolutely nada.” Barnet and I go back and forth about whether he should foster a dog when a thought strikes me. Am I…dating Darren Barnet? Yep, he got to me—just like the rest of the Internet.
Ahead, Barnet talks what’s next for Paxton, thirsty DMs, and why Brad Pitt should join Never Have I Ever season 2.
[The producers] told me to go home and practice it. Originally they wanted me to pull it off with one hand with no assistance from the other from the back. I kept choking myself, so I figured [out] a way to do it on the day. I think take two is where I finally got it the way they wanted. I needed a bigger shirt because they were having this struggle of, “We want a shirt tight enough to flatter your figure but not so tight you can’t get it off smoothly.”
