Little do you know we were going 0mph during the car/kiss scene. I guess that means when Devi and Paxton kissed, it went from 0 – 100 real quickđ….Whatever, I bet Drake thinks itâs funny.
“Never Have I Ever” star Darren Barnet spoke to Insider about his favorite scene from season one of the Netflix series, “humanizing” Paxton Hall-Yoshida, and forging his own path.
“I expected the show to do well and I knew we made something good, but the amount of love and admiration from fans has been insane,” Barnet told us. “I knew it would do well, but I didn’t know it would do this well, and that’s maybe a tribute to quarantine, with everyone being able to sit on the couch and actually watch it for what it’s worth and realize that it’s not just a comedy. It also touches on very real-life topics.”
“NHIE” was cocreated by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, inspired by Kaling’s own childhood. The show centers on Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a first-generation Indian American who begins her sophomore year at Sherman Oaks High School with a mission to ditch her uncool reputation and become popular.

Darren Barnet and I are discussing lunch options over Zoom when he says he’s craving a burger, fries, and a vanilla milkshake. Quarantining by himself since the beginning of the coronavirus lockdown, all heâs looking for is some comfort food, which is surprising given his apparent dedication to shirtless Instagram posts.
Barnet currently stars in the Mindy Kaling-created comedy, Never Have I Ever, and is probably best known for his washboard abs. Since the show dropped on Netflix, fans have swooned over Barnet’s portrayal of Paxton Hall-Yoshida, the resident jock and object of protagonist Deviâs affections. And itâs no wonder, given that five minutes into the pilot, Barnet steps out of the pool dripping wet, abs visible, and with Robynâs Dancing On My Own playing in the background.
âI think [the producers] were scared I was too muscular,â he says with a laugh when I ask him about his audition. âI remember them saying, âhis guns are a little much.ââ
Staying in shape comes second nature to Barnet; he’s played sports since his childhood. And in between the years of lacrosse, basketball, boxing, and martial arts, he tried to follow his dreams of becoming an actor. After guest-starring on hit shows like This Is Us and Criminal Minds, the actor was determined to get into shape for his first series regular role.

âNever Have I Everâ star Darren Barnet has landed a guest star role on the Season 7 premiere of ABCâs âMarvelâs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,â Variety has learned exclusively.
In the showâs final season opener, titled âThe New Deal,â Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the agents are thrust back in time to 1931 New York City, where they encounter Barnetâs character. Itâs unclear how many episodes Barnet will be featured in the role, although his character could have a lasting impact on the âAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.â universe.
Fan favorite Patton Oswalt also returns to the series in an unspecified new role; in past seasons, Oswalt has portrayed iterations of the Koenig siblings, a family with close ties to S.H.I.E.L.D.
Barnet is most recently known for his portrayal of teen heartthrob Paxton Hall-Yoshida on Netflixâs comedy series, co-created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher.
In July, Variety reported that the long-running ABC showâs seventh season would be its last. âNext summerâs Season 7 will be the last for Marvelâs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,â the showâs official Twitter account announced. âThanks to our fans for allowing us to be the longest-running Marvel TV series to-date.â
âThe New Dealâ was written by George Kitson and directed by Kevin Tancharoen. The show was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen, who also serve as executive producers along with Jeffrey Bell, Jeph Loeb, and Jim Chory. The series is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.
âMarvelâs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.â Season 7 premieres May 27 at 10 p.m.

In Netflixâs âNever Have I Ever,â Darren Barnet stars as Paxton Hall-Yoshida, the popular swimmer who Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) propositions in an effort to boost her reputation in high school. The teen heartthrob character was originally named âPaxton Hallâ until creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher learned of Barnetâs own Japanese heritage and decided to incorporate his mixed background into the role, hence âYoshida.â
The 29-year-old tells Variety why he was initially nervous about incorporating his multiethnic background, how his high school experience had little in common with Paxtonâs, and why he is also Team Devi.
Iâm in L.A., day fifty-something of being totally alone. So, itâs been quite the inner journey, having me, myself and I. I try to stick to a routine as much as possible but certain days, sleeping in until 1 in the afternoon. Doing publicity is one of the only things keeping me with a schedule. Itâs nice to just have some things to do every day and get me up. Iâm trying to work out and be ready at any point to take my shirt off âcause people keep asking me that [laughs]. I wouldnât say Iâm in as great of shape as I was on-camera but, thankfully, if I have to get ready for something, itâs a pretty quick process for me to get it back.
I did not expect it. I did not expect my character to be such a focal point. So, thatâs been some pressure, but Iâm blown away because a lot of people are saying, âYou went past being a heartthrob, and you did things with the character that I think only you could do.â And that was making him human, making him likable. Iâm honored that they feel I accomplished that.
It has been the number one thing Iâve seen on breakdowns for auditions since I started this career. It got to the point where I got so close and so close and so close and just kept being denied denied denied, I was like, âI guess Iâm just not hitting the mark on this one.â
So, getting this one was cool. Mindy [Kaling] and all of them, Iâm sure they saw people better looking than me, in better shape than me, all that, but they took us all aside, saying, âWe chose you for this role because of you and what you bring as a person.â That was an honor to know because they wanted Paxton to be more than just abs.
Love it, yeah.
